File Size Unit Converter

Convert between digital storage units: bytes, KB, MB, GB, TB, and PB.

This is a unit conversion tool

This tool converts between storage unit measurements (KB โ†” MB โ†” GB). It does not compress or reduce actual file sizes. Use this to understand how the same storage amount is expressed in different units.

๐Ÿ“˜ How It Works

1

Binary (1024) Base

File sizes use powers of 1024: 1 KB = 1024 bytes, 1 MB = 1024 KB, etc. This matches how operating systems and storage actually work.

2

Base Conversion

Input is first converted to bytes by multiplying by 1024^n where n is the unit's position (0 for bytes, 1 for KB, etc.).

3

Target Unit Division

Bytes are divided by 1024^n for the target unit. For example, bytes รท 1024ยฒ = MB, bytes รท 1024ยณ = GB.

4

Simultaneous Output

All unit representations are calculated and displayed at once, enabling quick comparison across the entire size spectrum.

5

Smart Formatting

Large values show locale-formatted numbers with thousands separators. Small values use scientific notation for readability.

๐Ÿ’ก Common Use Cases

Storage Planning

Compare file and drive sizes. How many 4.7 GB DVDs fit on a 1 TB drive? Convert to compare effectively.

Download Estimates

Convert download speeds (Mbps) to understandable file times. How long to download a 2 GB file at 10 Mbps?

Cloud Storage Management

Convert between units when managing cloud quotas. Compare what 15 GB free storage means in MB for documents.

Photo & Video Estimation

Estimate storage needs: if each photo is 5 MB, how many GB do you need for 1000 photos?

Server Configuration

Convert memory and storage specifications. Configure buffer sizes from KB to appropriate byte values.

Bandwidth Calculations

Convert monthly data caps between GB and TB. Understand what 1 TB monthly limit means for daily usage.
